What did St. Cuthbert do to make him a saint?

Saint Cuthbert is said to have performed or been associated with very many miracles during his lifetime, making him rather more than an ordinary saint.

One of my favourite stories tells of his journey on horseback to become a recluse on the Island of Lindisfarne (Holy Island); he travelled for many days without food through desolate countryside with no houses or farms until both he and his horse were almost starving. They came to an abandoned, derelict hut with its thatched roof collapsing towards the ground and Cuthbert decided to stay there overnight; his horse began to pull at the thatch in order to eat it and out fell a linen bundle. Cuthbert was amazed to find that it contained bread, cheese, meat and drink - so both horse and rider were able to enjoy a meal.

The number of miracles that were performed by him or in his favour is astounding; his belt and his shoe were said to have healed people after his death and a lame man who visited his tomb was cured.

Miracles are not the only requirement for sainthood - living an exemplary life is also required. Cuthbert qualified through his lifelong devotion to God, being in turn a monk, a preacher, a hermit and a bishop.

He is considered to be one of the greatest English saints.
