Simply because we need Allah's mercy more in hereafter than in this life. "Allah's mercy is more than it is in this life." doesn't mean that it is few in this world. Just look around and you will his infinite mercy. You can observe a new born baby to see how Allah is merciful. And the above statement is to make us understand that there is always hope for salvation, since if God is this merciful in this world, and if his mercy is more than it is in this world, then there is no need for not being hopeful for His forgiveness. And the reason why it is not more in this world as well as in hereafter is that "We are in a trial, we are in an examination. And the important point is grading the examination and that is why Alah's mercy is more in grading our exam paper....
To love mercy is to prefer being kind to being correct. It is the moral lesson of the God of Abraham. In Micah 6:8 "He has shown you, o mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you but to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." The sage Hillel considered this the entirety of the Law, and everything else mere commentary. Christians are taught it is better to forgive offenses than to avenge them, and Moslems call God the All-Merciful, the Giver of Mercy. But economics has made the world too angry and competitive for the love of mercy, and so instead of lasting happiness most of us experience greed, righteous indignation and the need to get even.
