Bernadette is the feminine form of Bernard (Bernhard), which is from the Old German for bear hardy, or "brave as a bear". A famous example is St. Bernadette Soubirous, who in 1858 had visions of the Blessed Mother at Lourdes and was canonized as a saint in 1933.
