What was Saint Peter's life after Christ?

Peter the apostle (often known as St Peter) preached the first public Christian sermon at the Jewish feast of Pentecost, and thousands of Jewish people responded by believing in Jesus.

Peter appeared before the authorities, was imprisoned and miraculously released.

He was a leader in the first church, in Jerusalem. Roman Catholics believe he was the first pope. (Protestants don't believe this)

Peter wrote two of the letters (epistles) in the New Testament. They are called, not surprisingly, 1 Peter and 2 Peter!

According to tradition, Peter was martyred by being crucified upside down.

He said 3 times that he did not know Jesus. He said this to protect himself, because he was afraid of the consequences if he was found out to be one of Jesus' disciples.

Jesus had predicted that Peter would deny him before the cockerel crowed twice. After he had denied Jesus 3 times the cockerel crowed for the second time, and he was devastated when he realised what he had done.

It was once believed that Acts of the Apostles told the story of Peter after the crucifixion of Jesus. Although there is no mention in Acts, a widely accepted tradition is that the apostle Peter also travelled to Rome and led the Christian community there, becoming the first bishop of Rome before being crucified there. The reliability of Acts is now strongly disputed, with Uta Ranke-Heinemann (Putting Away Childish Things) saying that the whole book is a work of Propaganda. If Acts tells us anything about the life of Peter, it does so by its silence on Peter travelling to Rome.

What little we know, that can be considered reliable, about Peter is that Paul met him in Jerusalem and believe him to be one of the three leaders of the church there. Galatians 2:11 tells us that Peter visited Antioch. Francis A. Sullivan SJ (From Apostles to Bishops) says that the reference to Peter (Cephas) in 1 Corinthians 1:12 means he probably also travelled to Corinth, otherwise there would have been no reason for Christians there to say "I am of Cephas." As for Rome, we can not say either way, except that the author of 1 Clement, written from Rome at the end of the century, appears unaware that Peter had been in Rome a few decades earlier.

After Jesus' death, Saint Peter became a prominent leader in the early Christian church. He played a crucial role in spreading Christianity and establishing the Church. Saint Peter was eventually martyred in Rome, where tradition holds that he was crucified upside down at his own request, as he felt unworthy to die in the same way as Jesus.
