Simon the Apostle (not Simon Peter) was not canonized as that process was not established until more than 1100 years after his death. He would have been declared a saint by the early Church based on his life as an apostle and his apparent martyrdom. Early Christians considered martyrdom to be a first class ticket into heaven.
