Peter could be impulsive and short tempered. He was prone to opening his mouth before thinking and he was rebuked by Our Lord a few times for this. He could be cowardly and because of this he denied even knowing Our Lord three times. After the death and ascension of Jesus and before Pentecost, the apostles looked on Peter for leadership but he either could not or would not provide it. Pentecost brought about some great changes in Peter and he was able to pretty much overcome his problems.
