Saint Irene was born in Magedorn, Persia in the fourth century ACE. She was the daughter of the pagan king, Licinius and was named Penelope. To avoid her being exposed to anything having to do with Christianity, Saint Irene was locked a tower by her father. However, her tutor was a Christian and she ended up converting to the faith. She refused all offers of marriage, choosing instead to dedicate her life to Christ.
