A:

We know nothing about the life or death of Saint Luke, although that has not prevented various imaginative traditions arising:

  • One well known tradition is that Luke died of natural causes in 70 CE.
  • Another says that he was hanged by a pagan priest in Boeotia, presumably because of his teachings.
  • Yet another tradition says he died in Thebes.
  • Some also say Luke died in Bithynia.
Clearly, if there is no consensus among the various traditions about where or how he died, we can not say why Luke was killed, or even that he was killed at all.
