First of all, I should point out that the 'true' order of the books of the New Testament is the order in which tradition places them - with the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, followed by Acts and the epistles. There should be no argument with that. As to the chronological order: first of all, there is a near-consensus among scholars that Mark's Gospel was the first of the gospels. It is widely considered to have been written around 70 CE. A further problem in establishing a chronological order among the books occurs when certain books are believed to have been written in 'layers' or stratas over some time. Some scholars say that 1 John was written in 3 stratas and by various authors, with the first strata coming from a Jewish, pre-Christian sect. Revelation may also have at least two identifiable stratas, with some material being pre-Christian, while other material is quite late. Scholars do not believe that all the epistles attributed to Paul were actually written by him or even in his lifetime. Fr. Raymond E. Brown, a member of the Vatican's Roman Pontifical Biblical Commission, has expressed his belief that critical scholars have reached a near consensus that only seven epistles are Paul's: 1 Thessalonians, Galatians, 1 & 2 Corinthians, Philippians, Philemon and Romans. However, other research also casts doubt on 1 Thessalonians and Philippians. In summary, an estimate of the approximate order in which work commenced on the books would be something like: * Revelation * 1 John * Hebrews * Galatians * 1 Corinthians * 2 Corinthians * Romans * Philemon * 1 Thessalonians * 2 Thessalonians * Ephesians * James * 2 John * 3 John * Mark * Matthew * Luke * 1 Peter * Jude * 2 Peter * Acts * John * Titus * 1 Timothy * 2 Timothy * Colossians

This is unlikely to be an accurate chronological order, but may be approximately true, although other views are equally valid.

The 27 books of the New Testament are typically organized into four sections: the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John), the Acts of the Apostles, the Epistles (from Romans to Jude), and the Book of Revelation. These books are not always presented in chronological order but are generally arranged according to similar themes or authorship.
