Despite her father's wishes that she marry, she ran away from home and joined Saint Francis. That took courage as Clare abandoned a life of ease, wealth and comfort. When invaders of Frederick II were about to overrun the town and her convent she took the Blesed Sacrament to the balcony of the convent and held it up. The invaders were so frightened that they quickly left.
