Jesus' death itself didn't particularly strengthen his followers. What really strengthened His followers was Him rising from the grave. As you may know from reading the Bible if you do, some of His followers completely denied that they even knew Him. However, when He came back from the dead, they knew that He was the son of God and King of the Jews so they believed and had faith in Him.
There were those who hated Jesus and were glad of His death, others, such as His closest followers were devastated by His demise.
