Mark wrote his Gospel for Gentile Christians. Early Christian tradition placed Mark in Rome preserving the words of Peter for Roman Christians.
Papias, bishop of Hieropolis around 130 CE, named Mark as the author of the gospel and the 'interpreter' of Peter, presumably as if Mark had written from Peter's memory and notes as his secretary (Eusebius,Ecclesiastical History, 3.39). A Mark had been mentioned by Paul as one of his fellow workers in his letter to Philemon (chapter 24) and by Luke in Acts of the Apostles. Then, in the First Epistle of Peter (l Peter 5:13), a pseudonymous document from the second century, a Mark is mentioned as Peter's son. While Papias had made an unsupported assumption, he could at least point to a possible chain of transmission, unaware that the author of 1 Peter had no basis for his reference to Mark. Subsequent Christian tradition has strongly held that the Gospel of Mark was actually written by Mark, and that he learnt the gospel from Peter.
Scholars say that the Gospel of Mark was actually written by an anonymous author approximately 70 CE. Parallels with Paul's Epistle to the Galatians and 1 Corinthians show that he knew these works and could have learnt some key information about Jesus from these. Paul tells that James was the brother of Jesus, and that Peter and John were pillars of the church in Jerusalem. He provides some gospel sayings and talks of Jesus as being crucified and of rising again. Paul also said that some of the disciples saw the risen Jesus, although possibly only in visions. The author of Markseems to have been unwilling to incorporate visions of the risen Jesus into his Gospel, so gave us no resurrection account, although the "Long Ending" (verses 16:9-20) were added much later. Denis R. MacDonald plausibly says that much further material was added by Mark from the Homeric epics, which all Greek students were required to study in close detail.
It is not specified how Mark obtained his information. It could have come from a variety of sources such as research, personal experience, interviews, or secondary sources.
