I assume Mary found favor with God in at least two ways. One being her lifestyle. She apparently lived honestly and according to the scriptures and the law. The other being her family line. Prophesy foretold from which lineage the Messiah would come. You can read about this in the gospels (not John). We often read in scripture about the sovereignty of God. We don't always understand the mind of God and how He acts with reference to the affairs of men but we do read in scripture that God often chooses certain people for certain roles. I am certain God chose Mary way, way before she ever lived. God intended for the Messiah to come from her family line and He knew when and where He would cause Messiah to come into the world. There may be other ways in which Mary found favor with God, but this is what I understand.

Mary found favor with God by being obedient and faithful to His will. She willingly accepted the role of being the mother of Jesus, despite the challenges and uncertainties she faced. Her humility and trust in God's plan for her life are what made her highly favored.
