Daphne wasn't a goddess, she was a Nymph. She was the daughter of Peneus, a lesser river deity and the son of Oceanus and Tethys.
Daphne turned into a laurel with the help of her father a river god as Apollo was chasing her. After this the laurel became sacred to Apollo and was give to the winners in competitions in Greece especially in the Olympics
