If a person has a mental illness or is possessed by demons but believes in God will they still go to heaven when they die?

The early Christians believed that evil spirits or demons often entered humans. In fact they believed that mental illness and even sicknesses were caused by possession by evil spirits. However, we now know conclusively that mental illnesses and unusual behaviour are not caused by spirits. In spite of this, belief in possession by evil spirits has not entirely died out, and a few people sometimes still take part in "exorcisms" to drive out evil spirits.
What is important is that mental illness is not the 'fault' of the sufferer, and it is not something caused by demons. It is simply an illness that can be treated, with proper medical help. It seems unlikely that the Christian God would punish a person for having an illness, through no fault of his or her own.

Belief in God alone does not determine one's salvation. Salvation is believed to be based on one's relationship with God, repentance, and acceptance of Jesus Christ as savior in many Christian beliefs. Mental illness and possession are believed to be separate spiritual matters that do not directly affect salvation. Ultimately, the final judgment is believed to be up to God.
