How does religion affect people in India?

It depends on what religion they come from - all the major religions are represented in India but I assume you are referring to the Hindu religion - practiced by about 80% of the population. Basically people are very religious and how their religion affects them will depend on their Guru or the particular school that they follow. It will affect what they eat (vegetarian, non-vegetarian), what they drink (alcohol, non-drinker), to whom they pray (a particular deity/god is the norm). They may also perfrom and follow certain rituals such as: when they can wash their hair or when they are allowed to do their washing. They will probably celebrate certain festivals throughout the year depending on where they live and what sect they come from. In addition, on certain holidays/religious days they may make a pilgrimage to a holy place. In additon, certain individuals may wish to fast on a particular day of the week or for a particular reason (for example, a mother may fast during her daughter studies, to encourage her to do well in something particular).

Depends on which religion or thing you're thinking of. I myself am a Christian and I've seen the ways it completely changes a person's life. I've seen someone at rock-bottom turn their lives around so much that it stuns all the people they know. It can be as big as deciding you don't want to take your life after all, to someone apologizing to their parents that they lied about taking something or seeing a movie they weren't supposed to see.Would someone even care about staying alive or apologizing if the only thing there was for them to care about in life was money, video games, or TV? I doubt it. I'm saying all this to get at one point: it's not "religion" that affects people, it's the person, being, or thing, you're worshiping.
