A village carpenter was among the very poorest of the poor, yet Luke's Gospel says he was required to travel to Bethlehem for a census, something which Uta Ranke-Heinemann (Putting Away Childish Things) says could not have been required of him unless he owned taxable property there. She says that if Mary's offering of pigeons at the Temple is not just a fantasy of the Gospel writer, it is clear proof of how poor the couple was as only the very poorest Jews were permitted to make such a small sacrifice. Yet, they could afford the long trip from Galilee to Jerusalem every year for the Passover.

In Matthew's Gospel, they owned a house in Bethlehem, as this was their home town, not Nazareth. After the magi ('wise men') brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, they would have been rich beyond their wildest dreams, easily able to support themselves for as many years as needed in Egypt before King Herod died and they could return. On the return journey to their home in Bethlehem, Joseph was warned in a dream of further danger in Judea, so they turned aside and travelled to Galilee, where they settled in a city called Nazareth. Presumably they still had enough money to buy a house there and could afford to abandon their house in Bethlehem.
