From The Bible, they are basically letters that make up much of the New Testament. All of the Apostle Paul's books are considered epistles, from Romans to Hebrews. James, 1 & 2 Peter, 1,2 & 3 John, and Jude are also considered epistles.

Some of the different types of writing are, Proghesy, Epistiles (letters), poetry, alegory, symbolism history, songs and apocolyptic writings. but I'm sure I have missed some. Just remember that the rule of thumb for interpreting scripture accuratly is to first approach from a literal perspective and always read the preceding and proceding verses so that the context is apparent.
