There are many differences. Religion give one something to believe in that is either greater than oneself and/or allows one to become greater than what one is. Counsiling helps one to solve a problem. Religion can do the same thing but also gives one a set of morals, and a lifestyle, and it is almost like it gives one a sense of purpose in one's life. Religion can help fulfill the basic human need of belonging to something greater than one's self and just belonging in a group, being loved, and loving. One can live without a religion, but I couldn't. I would feel empty. Most people who don't have a belief system usually do. (athiests belive in something. They generaly belive in not beliving in anything.) I hope this answers your question.
