He discovered that the age of the Earth was much older than what religion argued. Religion said God created the Earth 6,000 years ago, but Buffon found out that it was at least 100,000 years ago - and probably even older than that (3 million years ago).

He thought the earth knew several periods. The first one being when Earth was all covered in magma, the second one being when the magma cold down, the third one being when water covered most of the surface, and the fourth one being when the animal started populating the planet.

He was one of the first person to consider the human species as an animal. He believed that men were superior to animals because we were able to think, we have a conscience - but we are similar to animals physiologically.

He categorized different species into family groups, or other kinds of groups. For example, carnivores have claws and sharp teeth; herbivores have hoofs and their teeth are less sharp (esp. their canines).

He is one of the founder of modern geology.

He inspired Charles Darwin in someway. Darwin was hesitant before publishing his book The Origin of the Species, but when Buffon published his book (which was already somewhat against what the religion said) Darwin decided to publish his too.
