What does it mean to have the holyghost?

Receiving the power of the Holy Spirit means being filled with the divine enabling of God for those acts of service which are the privilege and duty of disciples who follow the Lord Jesus Christ, believing Him to be everything The Bible says He is. The power of the Holy Spirit was promised by the resurrected Jesus before He ascended to heaven. Acts 1:8-9 "But you shall receive power after the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and you shall be witnesses to me, both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and to the uttermost part of the earth. And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight." The New Testamentdistinguishes between having the Spirit, which is true of all believers, and being filled with the Spirit which is an imbuement of power activating that which is already resident. Acts 2:1-4 "And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them, cloven tongues as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them utterance." Acts 4:31 "And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness." Everyone who repents of sin and believes in Jesus Christ * is born of the Spirit, * indwelt by the Spirit, whose presence makes the believer's body a temple * baptised by the Spirit, thus sealing him for God.

You receive the Holy Spirit when God says your heart is right. You should be baptised in the name of Jesus, but if you aren't you should know that you need to be baptised. You need to be praying to receive it. You need to lift up your hands to the Lord and invite Him into your heart. You need to give up all of your sins and just focus entirely on God. You ask Him for it. The Holy Spirit id a gift that God wants to give you. God is just waiting for you to ask for it. God has no greater desire than to give you the Holy Spirit. Just pray, ask for forgiveness, focus on God, invite Him into your heart, and ask for it. When you start speaking in another language and you have no idea what your saying, you know you have it. I have it and it's the best feeling to have God inside of you. Also, remember that you need the Holy Spirit to make it into Heaven. Opinions differ, and even what you mean by "gifts of the Holy Spirit" isn't perfectly clear. There are a couple of places in the Bible that you might be referring to.

In Isaiah, there are seven (or eight, depending on which text you use) "spirits" spoken of (the spirit of wisdom, the spirit of understanding, and so on) that some people call "the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit".

There are also several places in the New Testament that refer to spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12, in particular). Some people think these are just talents or abilities or aptitudes that are with you more or less from birth (we'll leave aside what this says about predestination), and others think they're supernatural gifts that are given to believers when they become believers and which are distinct from abilities that they had prior to that time. Some even think there's a mixture of the two. Scripture doesn't really explicitly come right out and say exactly when it happens.

As with most religious questions, if you want to know what the "right" answer is to avoid jeopardizing your standing in a particular church, especially if that church has a rather dogmatic view of such things, you should ask your spiritual leader (minister/priest/whatever).

Eph 1:13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,

This word signifies ownership. It was used in everyday language of the time to denote a seal or emblem of ownership. Somebody going to the market would put their stamp emblem on some goods to show they have bought them and intend to come and pick them up.

God give the believer the Holy Spirit to show they belong to Him. This idea is carried on in the next verse:

Eph 1:14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

The Holy Spirit is described as a guarantee or down payment. The Holy Spirit is given to believers to indwell the believer until such time as the believer goes to be with the LORD.
