He rose again victorious over death and the grave. He was seen by some of those who later were to be His witnesses to others of this central fact of the Christian faith, that we serve a risen Savior, who is Lord of life and death, not a dead martyr.
Another thing that happened is that the opponents of the resurrection started immediately their campaign of misinformation. They told the soldiers to say that 'the disciples stole the body while we slept.' The only problem with this is that everyone in those days knew that the penalty for such neglect of duty was death. So, no-one has been able to explain to this day why they weren't executed and also why the opponents never produced a body, if Jesus never rose. They certainly knew where it was laid, since they set a guard there.
Probably the resurrection appearances of Jesus which began on that day would rank as the greatest surprise of all time. Dead men don't rise. Nor do those who have just been crucified 'revive', powerfully break out of sealed tomb, (an act which itself, since it involved breaking a Roman seal, was punishable by death) and inspire people to die for the fact. The disciples Jesus met on the Emmaus road typified the attitude - 'But we trusted that it had been He which should have redeemed Israel.' Thus, they believed all their hopes were dashed until they met the reality of the risen Lord.
Unbelief is also found not just in the comments made by the disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-32) but elsewhere when the male disciples refused to believe the first witnesses to the resurrection, who were women.
Summary: Thus as part of the truthful accounts of the resurrection, which don't hide the discrediting unbelief of the frightened disciples (people tellng tall tale don't usually discredit themselves) there is misinformation, surprise and unbelief.

31 At that very hour, some Pharisees came to Jesus and told Him, “Leave this place and get away, because Herod wants to kill You.” 32 But Jesus replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘Look, I will keep driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach My goal.’ 33 Nevertheless, I must keep going today and tomorrow and the next day, for it is not admissible for a prophet to perish outside of Jerusalem.
