To my understanding of the term, Religious Conservatism is a movement that holds that people should interpret the holy book or books of the religion literally. It also adheres to the traditions and teachings of the early founders of the religion.
It does not accept the "progressive" or "liberal" views of those who claim to be followers of the religion but who try to introduce teachings that contradict or fly in the face of those written in the holy books and those taught by the founders of the religion.
Religious conservatism is a political and social ideology that combines traditional religious beliefs and values with conservative principles. It often emphasizes the importance of preserving traditional moral values, social institutions, and cultural practices rooted in a particular religious tradition. Religious conservatives may advocate for policies that align with their religious beliefs, such as opposing abortion or supporting traditional marriage.
The growing secularization in post-World War II United States led to some individuals feeling a loss of traditional values and identities tied to religion. As a reaction, some people turned towards religious conservatism as a way to uphold and protect their beliefs from what they perceived as a changing societal landscape. This increase in support for religious conservatism was fueled by a desire to maintain a sense of stability and moral grounding in an increasingly secular society.
Clarence Darrow's defense of John Scopes in the Scopes "Monkey Trial" highlighted the clash between rural religious conservatism and urban modernism. Darrow argued for scientific education and the separation of church and state, challenging the traditional beliefs held in rural areas. The trial became a symbolic battle between old and new ideas, representing larger cultural and religious divisions within society.
A religious toponym is a place name that has religious significance or connection. It can reflect the religious beliefs, practices, or history of a particular place, often named after a deity, religious figure, or associated with a religious event or site. Religious toponyms are found in various cultures and can provide insights into the religious heritage of a region.
The noun form of "religious" is "religion."
The abstract noun for "religious" is "religiosity," which refers to the quality or state of being religious.
