What is blasphemy?

When someone talks contrary to an accepted belief system, then it is viewed as blasphemy irrespective if the belief system is right or wrong. For instance, some religions teach that it is blasphemy to use "the Lord's name in vain."

Basically it is something which contradicts someone's cherished beliefs or insults something they hold to be holy.

It is also putting someone else down, because that would mean you are trying to make yourself higher than someone.

This is a terrible sin. It was worthy of death. This is why the Sanhedrin killed Jesus because they believed he was blaspheming when he said he was the Son of God. He is the Son of God.
