Is an originally Catholic ritual which is intended to destroy the flesh to gain higher levels of spirituality. But the more modern and simpler forms of Mortification is abstaining from something like alcohol, sex, TV or even committing yourself to a life of poverty (monks). In other religions Mortification is known as Ascetism.

Mortification is the act of feeling embarrassed, humiliated, or ashamed by one's actions or behavior. It can be the result of making a mistake or being caught in an uncomfortable or awkward situation.
