I believe that there are two personal motives which explain all of man's actions.
They are survival and pleasure.
Survival is a well known animal drive. We fight against an attacker, jump out of the path of a car, eat.
Pleasure is more difficult. The pleasure is relative. You get decide to get up in the morning not because the bed is uncomfortable but because of the displeasure of your employer if you don't arrive or the pains of the bladder exceed the warmth of the bed.
The pleasure might come from personal gratification due to early childhood moral training and one makes a financial contribution or volunteer labor.
I have no references; just a personal theory which I believe is a truism.
The two motives combat one another is the actions of suicide. A mentally healthy person will chose life but obviously some decide that the displeasure of life can overcome the drive to survive.
Personal motives are the underlying reasons or desires that drive an individual to take certain actions or make particular decisions. These motives can be influenced by various factors, such as personal values, beliefs, emotions, and past experiences. Understanding personal motives can provide insight into why someone behaves in a certain way.
Friars typically have a religious or altruistic motive, seeking to serve their faith and help others through their work. Couples, on the other hand, are motivated by personal relationships, love, companionship, and building a life together.

The two common motives among the Knights in the first Crusades were religious fervor to reclaim the Holy Land from Muslim rule and the promise of spiritual redemption through participation in the Crusades. Additionally, knights sought opportunities for wealth, land, and social advancement through their involvement in the Crusades.
Spiritual conviction usually refers to beliefs or values based on one's connection to a higher power or religious faith, while personal conviction is more about one's deeply held beliefs or principles that are not necessarily tied to a specific spiritual belief. Spiritual conviction tends to stem from a sense of divine guidance or faith, whereas personal conviction can be shaped by a variety of personal experiences or moral compass.
Personal prayer is a communication with a higher power or deity that is individualized and comes from the heart and personal beliefs of the person praying. It can be a way to seek guidance, express gratitude, ask for forgiveness, or simply connect spiritually. Personal prayer is often done in private settings and can vary greatly depending on the individual's faith and beliefs.
Psychosocial motives are personal motives that drive us to pursue things like power, mastery, achievement, and intimacy. The motivation comes from a place inside us that wants to avoid failure because of cultural expectations.
