According to the Torah/Genesis, Abraham had sons by both his wife Sarah, and by Sarah's handmaiden, Hagar. Isaac was the son born of the former, Ishmael the son born of the latter. The Ishmalites are the descendants of Ishmael. "Ishmalite" is also generally taken to be another word for "Muslim".
We are told of two wives of Abraham. His first wife was Sarah of whom was born Isaac and is in the line of Jesus. Abraham's second wife was Keturah who bore him six sons. I Chronicles 1:32 tells us that Keturah was a concubine, a wife lower in status than Sarah. In Genesis 16 we are told also that Sarah who could not have children gave her husband, Abraham, her handmaiden, Hagar, to raise up seed in his name. The son from this union was Ishmael. Ishmael and the six sons of Keturah all have Arab descendants.
In Genesis chapter 17 Genesis 17:16 And I (God) will bless her (Sarah) and also give you (Abraham) a son by her; then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall be from her."

Hagar and Ishmael were sent away because of tensions between Hagar, the mother of Ishmael, and Sarah, Abraham's wife, after the birth of Isaac. Sarah felt threatened by Ishmael's presence and demanded that Abraham send them away to ensure that Isaac would inherit his lineage without competition. God reassured Abraham about the situation, instructing him to listen to Sarah, promising that Ishmael would also become a great nation.
The Arab people and tribes are descendents of Abraham, not all Muslims are decedents of Ishmael, only the Arab people are the descendants of Ishmael who was one of the sons of Abraham, the other being Isaac. Ishmael is also known as the father of Arabs.
