The indigenous Japanese religion is Shinto, which is a type of ancestor-worship with the long-departed taking their places as gods, or kami. The cult of the emperor was also tied into this. Since WWII, most Japanese are atheists, although they are influenced by Shinto, Buddhism and Confucianism and to a much lesser extent, Christianity.
