The main message of Matthew chapter 3 is the ministry of John the Baptist preparing the way for the coming of Jesus Christ. John calls for repentance and baptism as a symbol of cleansing and readiness for the Messiah's arrival. It emphasizes the importance of spiritual renewal and turning away from sin.

Matthew chapter 3 is the story of John the Baptist, adapted from Mark 1:1-10. The author of Matthew made frequent references to the Old Testament, and so here, he added the reference to the Book of Isaiah and the reference to Abraham. Matthew was also concerned about having Jesus baptised by John, so had John forbid Jesus from being baptised, but Jesus insisted.

As in Mark and the other gospels, the main message is that John expected Jesus, the one greater than he. The message of Matthew's account differs little from that of Mark, other than the reluctance to have John baptise Jesus for the forgiveness of sins.

We know that the author of Matthew used Mark's Gospel as the primary source for information about the life of Jesus, because whenever Matthew agrees with Mark, the text is virtually identical in Greek - something that could not have happened if he was relying on oral traditions, or even Aramaic sources. Major themes unique to Matthew can readily be identified from material that does not appear in Mark. These major themes include that the life of Jesus had been prefigured in the Old Testament; that Jesus was born in Bethlehem and descended through Joseph from King David; that the birth of Jesus was divinely ordained; and that the risen Jesus had been seen by his disciples. It also refers to the Old Testament for apparent proof of the role and divinity of Jesus.
