To be the main antagonist of a Dan Brown novel.

Beyond that, "camerlengo" is simply the Italian word for "chamberlain". In the Vatican, there are three chamberlains, with completely different duties. Dan Brown's camerlengo is equivalent to none of these positions, and was made up from nothing for dramatic effect, just like everything else Dan Brown writes about.

The Camerlengo is responsible for administering the property and revenues of the Holy See in the Catholic Church. Additionally, the Camerlengo plays a key role in the transition between papacies, particularly in the period between the death or resignation of a pope and the election of a new one.
