Adonis (from Semitic "Adon"; meaning "Lord" ) is the Greek god of life, death and rebirth. Some similarity exists between the nature and life of Jesus Christ although more emphasis is given to the physical beauty of the character who is said to die each winter to be reborn each spring. Adonis is complex and multiple stories exist in myth concerning Adonis' origin. A cult arose in the 1920's called "Adonism" which focuses on the worship of "hedonistic" beauty and pleasure but was snuffed by the areas socialist rebellion. It is also noted that a young handsome male is often referred to as an Adonis
