He worshiped the sun god Aten (an aspect of Ra), in a monistic way. That is, he recognized the existence of other gods, but only worshiped this one. Basically his religion was the worship of Aten (monism).

Akhenaten believed in a form of monotheistic religion centered around the worship of the sun god Aten. This belief system was referred to as Atenism and focused on the idea of Aten as the one true god.

Akhenaten was probably influenced by the Jewish people's monotheistic beliefs, though he was not Jewish himself. He worshipped the sun god ra, like his fathers before him, but he believed that ra was the only god, the creator god. I'm not sure that has an official name because no one believes that anymore

Why was it hard for people to accept monotheistic religion in ancient Egypt?

AnswerThe ancient Egyptian religion was both polytheistic and monistic, so having elements of monotheism. Nevertheless, when Pharaoh Akhenaten attempted to introduce a monotheistic religion, it probably had little influence outside his capital in Amarna, and did not survive his death. The Egyptians strongly believed in the gods of their ancestors and were simply unwilling to pretend not to believe in gods they 'knew' to be true.
