The first command given to man by God appears at Genesis 1:28 - "Be fruitful and become many and fill the earth and subdue it, and have in subjection the fish of the sea and the flying creatures of the heavens and every living creature that is moving upon the earth." (New World Translation)

This command, as worded in this verse, was not given to Adam by name ("And God proceeded to create the man in his image, in God's image he created him; male and female he created them." - (Gen. 1:27)) However, this command was given before the end of His six creative "days", after which he declared that everything was good, so it is reasonable to infer that he had given this command to Adam and Eve before they sinned. They were the only humans living that that time.

However, there are two creation accounts in Genesis, merely told in a different narrative. Genesis chapter two does not repeat the command to "Be fruitful and become many and fill the earth". The first job God gave Adam in Genesis 2 was to name the animals. (Gen. 2:19)

Another perspective:Unless you see the command to "be fruitful" as a "job," Adam's first job was "Gardener of Eden."

Genesis 2:15 - Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.[NKJV]

What did eating the fruit give to Adam and Eve?

It gave them eventual death, which is exactly what Jehovah God said would happen. (Genesis 2:17; 3:3) It also left them imperfect and sinful, & it was then that they decided to have children, which is why everyone after them is sinful as well. (Romans 5:12 & 14) However, Jesus giving his life as a sacrifice enabled mankind to have a chance at living eternally, if they exercised faith in that sacrifice. (John 3:16; Romans 5:18) (New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures)

Did God punish Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden?

The traditional Christian view is that god punished Adam and Eve for eating the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. He told Eve she must bear children in pain and told Adam that one day he will die, then banished them from the Garden of Eden. This is emphasised in the teachings of Augustine who said that this was an original sin that stains us all. Some scholars say that Genesis depicts Adam and Eve, in their innocent state, as being unaware that they must die one day, so eating the fruit of the Tree of Life was of no interest to them. They ate the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge and learnt to understand good and evil, including that they would one day die. They had already eaten of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and were now like gods (Genesis 3:22: "And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us..."), except that they were still mortal. God told them what they now already knew: that Eve she must bear children in pain and that one day they will die. By eating of the Tree of Life, they would then also be immortal, so the only course left open to God was to banish Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden and place cherubim and a flaming sword across the path back to the Tree of Life. This was not a punishment, but a necessary result of their having become god-like.
