Pontius Pilate certainly could have freed Jesus. Historians say that it would have been unacceptable to the Roman authorities for a Roman governor to give in to the demands of the Jews in the way described in the gospels. If he really did sentence Jesus to crucifixion without due cause, he would have risked immediate recall to Rome, in disgrace.

Whether or not Pontius Pilate would have altered the course of Christian history by freeing Jesus is a matter for debate. Many scholars believe that the beginning of Christianity had very little to do with the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.
