Actually most First Americans do and did practice a religious lifestyle, that is beyond what most immigrants were able to understand.

As there are hundreds of Native American peoples and languages and they lived in every North American environment and each had it's own traditions and cultures and social systems there is simply no way to say what Everyone believed and practiced. There was and is a huge range. No simple generalization would work.

The beliefs are formed around nature and the natural existing environment around them and not forgetting to give thanks for it. Since they lived all over the Americas it varied considerably, but the basics were often the same. They used terms for God and Gods helpers, often referd to as spirits (maybe an equivalent to angels), could be, but not limited to, Father Sun, the Creator, or the Great Spirit. His helpers may have been Mother Earth, spirit of the West (Wind), or an Animal Totem. What the immigrants refused to understand was thanking a tree for it's wood offering, or thanking an animal for it's flesh offering, so they could further live until the next offering was necessary. Talking to things that could not answer was absolutely unacceptable and would never be understood by the religions of the immigrants. The one leggeds, and no leggeds, and four leggeds were a positively savage concept that would not be tolerated, these things are not our equals and do not deserve respect of any kind ! First Americans have no religion ? I would say they had more religion and were more religious than anyone who stole their paradise. A First American daily thanks Mother Earth for the fact that they have a place to stand. When was the last time you verbally thanked whoever for the air you breath, or the warmth of Sun, the spirit of the West for the wind and the rain ? And speaking of things that don't answer you, has God ever answered you ? Try harder not measure things with ignorance and intolerance. God didn't put us here to judge and/or chastise one another ! APPARENTLY IT'S A PRETTY WELL KEPT SECRET ! !

The majority of Americans identify as Christian, with various denominations such as Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox. There is also a growing number of Americans who identify as having no religious affiliation (often referred to as "nones"), as well as adherents of other religions including Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and more.
