What is it that takes us towards God? There are many things, but probably the first is the grace of God. The second is the guidance of the Guru. And then, there are other virtues like our own past deeds, our karmas. Until we believe in God, we love God, we seek God and pray to God, the mind will not move towards God. There are some people in this world who are atheists, some are agnostics, and many others who accept that there is a God, but don't move towards God. Why? Because they are trapped in this illusion, they are caught by pleasures of the material world. When we are able to love God, then we are free from this and move towards God.

Is piety a virtue?

To answer this question one needs to define "piety" and "virtue", and then clarify who is asking the question. Simply put, piety is purity of heart, mind and body coupled with a perpetual awareness of the presence of God. "Virtue" we are told is the quality of doing good and avoiding bad. We are then forced to define "good" and "bad". To end a long story, and using extreme examples, piety is a virtue if you follow God, and a vice if you follow satan.
