Francesco (Francis) was a rich cloth merchant. He became well known for his bright clothing, rich friends, street brawls, and love of pleasure.

He became disillusioned with society. He was selling cloth and velvet in the marketplace on behalf of his father when a beggar came to him and asked for alms. At the end of his business deal, Francis abandoned his wares and ran after the beggar. When he found him, Francis gave the man everything he had in his pockets. His friends mocked him for his charity. When he got home, his father scolded him in a rage.

He left home in 1201 and joined a military expedition against Perugia, He was taken as a prisoner at Collestrada, spending a year as a captive. Upon his return to Assisi in 1203, Francis returned to his carefree life and in 1204, a serious illness led to a spiritual crisis. In 1205 Francis left for Puglia to enlist in the army of the Count of Brienne.

In 1204 he had a serious illness and a spiritual vision, after which he abandoned everything he knew and founded a religious order in which he worked until his death in 1226.

Francis was not a priest. He had been a deacon in a chapel, and became a self-made monk.
