Monica was a housewife and mother. At the time in history married women rarely worked outside the home. Monica was married to a pagan Roman government official named Patritius who was abusive and unfaithful. Also in the home was the mother of Patricius who is said to have also been abusive. Patritius and Monica had three children: Augustine the eldest, Navigius the second, and a daughter, Perpetua. Besides caring for her family, Monica had apostolate amongst the wives and mothers of her native town and provided help to the poor.
