According to Matthew's Gospel, Mary, Joseph and Jesus fled to Egypt to escape the wrath of King Herod. They returned to Judea after Herod's death, apparently to go to their home in Bethlehem, but being warned, turned aside and travelled to the relative safety of Galilee.
