Where was Paul of the Bible in prison?

The Book of Revelation contains a reference to his imprisonment on Patmos, and it is not known if any of his other writings (the Gospel of John and the letters 1.2, & 3 John) were written while in prison, as there are no allusions or suggestions that they were :

''9I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.'' ''10I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a Trumpet,''

It is unclear if this is indicating he wrote the whole book on Patmos, although it is clear he received much if not all of the 'Revelation' while imprisoned on the island. He may have written it down at the time, as at one point he was told to 'write it not'. This would seem to indicate that John was writing as the vision unfolded.

''4And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not.'' he was not in prison when he wrote Revalations he was just exiled to the island

When Paul returned to Jerusalem for his last visit, he was arrested and imprisoned in Jerusalem and then transferred to Caesarea. Paul was eventually transferred to Rome as a prisoner of the emperor.
