Approximately 84% of the world's population identifies with a religious group, according to a study conducted by the Pew Research Center. This translates to about 6.8 billion people worldwide.
The linked chart indicates all but 1.1 billion people have a religion out of the worlds approximate 7 billion people (14%). Whether some of the religions "count" is a matter of personal opinion. This is a difficult number to get. In some parts of the world (China) the practice of religion is frowned on and folks say they have none to avoid problems. In some parts (USA) the absence of a declared religious affiliation is viewed as "wrong" and people claim membership in some vague way to avoid problems.
The second largest religion in the world is Islam with around 1.5 Billion adherents. This is second to Christianity which has 2.2 Billion adherents.
A:There are now 7 billion people in the world. No one religion can claim more than half this number as members. Even Christianity's claim to have over 2 billion adherents appears to include a large number of atheists and nominal adherents.
By percentage, Vatican City is the biggest catholic country in the world (which is ironic since it is the smallest country in the world). 100% of its citizens are Catholic. By population, Brazil is the largest, with about 123 million Catholics.
