The founder of osteopathy was Andrew Taylor Still, M.D. The AT Still, MD, later changed its name to AT Still, MD,DO, after it founded an osteopathic medical school in Kirksville. AT Still, MD,DO was not happy with current medical schools at the time (the 1860s/1870s due to practices such as using arsenic) and wished that manipulation would be allowed in medical school. No MD schools at the time wanted this change to their medical school, so Still founded his own osteopathy or osteopathic medicine school.
Since then, the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree has become a recognized physician's degree, but most DOs want the DO degree change to MD,DO or MD. The old cracked DOs in the AOA will not allow this change to occur, like all the DO members want and request.
