Nimrod. The mighty hunter 'before' (read: against) the Lord. He climbed the tower of Babel and shot an arrow into heaven to declare his 'equality' with God. (Not unlike when Satan/Lucifer said "I will be like the Most High".) For this demonstration of utter vanity and wicked pride, God scattered mans united front by changing our languages thus slowing down our tendency to unite (against Him) globally. It is interesting to note that in the end times there will be a one-world government brought together by the one-language of computers. The second Tower of Babel, if you will.
Achilles But was he a god? Or son of a god and a woman?
According to the Bible, in the story of the Tower of Babel in Genesis, God confused the language of the people to prevent them from completing their tower in arrogance and pride. By scattering the people and confusing their language, God enforced His will that they should multiply and fill the earth.
In the Bible, God changed the names of several individuals, including Abram to Abraham, Sarai to Sarah, Jacob to Israel, and Simon to Peter. These name changes were often accompanied by a new identity or blessing signifying a change in the individual's role or relationship with God.
God changed Jacob's name to Israel, as mentioned in the Bible in Genesis 32:28. This renaming symbolized Jacob's transformation and new identity as a man who struggled with God and men, yet prevailed.
God did not split up languages.... language may never have been 'unified' in one first language, but there may have been separate and unconnected origins of speech and language. Many languages evolved out of other, earlier languages just as English is a blend of Latin, Germanic and old English with bits of others thrown in, and just as French, Spanish Portuguese and Italian can all trace their roots to Latin... which in turn shows connections with Greek. However there is no known link between the supposed ancestor-language of all these - proto-Indo-European. Nor is there any known connection between proto-Indo-European and the supposed Australian aboriginal language Proto-Pama-Nyungan or the native American languages.
