According to the Book of Genesis, Methuselah was grandfather of Noah, as well as the oldest living person, surviving to 969 years old. Although nothing evil is said of him, it can be shown that his death would have occurred in the year of Noah's Flood.

The number 17 is a particularly propitious number that we find associated in The Bible with all the most important Israelite leaders and ancestral figures. Methuselah is special because he was the Bible's oldest living human and because there is a special pattern in his life: he became a father at 187 (11x17) and died at 969 (57x17).
