There was; however,someone living in the environs of Bethlehem of Judah who was of nearer blood relation than he, who had rejected the proposition of redeeming the legacy of Elimelech by refusing to marry his deceased son's wife, and then providing her with an heir.One could not buy the land if one was unwilling to also marry a widow and be prepared to provide a son to pass on the inheritance to. The first-born son born to such a union became heir to the entire households of both the living redeemer and of the deadman being redeemed. Boaz allowed this person first opportunity to perform this act of righteousness, and when he declined, declared publicly his intention to do so. In Ruth 4:9 Boaz announced that he had not only bought Mahlon's but Chilion's inheritance as well.
