Ruth was an ancestor of David and Jesus. The story of Ruth, told in the Book of Ruth, is one of the great love stories in The Bible. Ruth was a poor widow from the land of Moab whose husband had been an Israelite. When her mother-in-law, Naomi, decided to return to Israel, she encouraged Ruth to stay in Moab. But Ruth responded, "Whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God." When they arrived in Naomi's hometown, Ruth went to the fields of Boaz, a wealthy relative of her late husband's. There she collected stalks of grain that the harvesters dropped. Because of Ruth's generosity to her mother-in-law, Boaz instructed his workers to drop grain on purpose so Ruth could pick up enough. At the end, Boaz marries Ruth. Their great grandson was David, the great king of Israel.
