Probably the first Christian persecutor was the Roman Emperor Constantine. He began a policy of persecuting the pagan temples, plundering them of their treasures and even demolishing them on any pretext. One of the most shocking events of his reign was his 'execution' of the pagan Sopater, one of his principal friends and advisers during his years at Constantinople. Sopater, who went in for mystical symbolism was killed on the pretext that he had magically 'fettered' the winds and thus prevented food from arriving at famine stricken Constantinople.

Constantine was followed as emperor by his Christian sons, who continued the persecution of the pagans.

What happened to the persecutors of Joseph smith?

The book titled, "The Fate of the Persecutors of the Prophet Joseph Smith" by N. B. Lundwall, details their fate. I read the book and in some cases the persecutors died gruesome deaths (too gory to describe). Others died in poverty and obscurity. It is interesting reading. I would recommend getting the book and reading it. It is available on Amazon.

Yes, Stephen did say "forgive them, for they know not what they do."
