If you look in Luke 24:47, the same scene is presented with more clarification. "repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name...

Otherwise who you deny the preaching to their sins will be retained, and who you preach to, in the name of Jesus their sins will be forgiven, if they believe (of course).

We are all sinners, how can a sinner forgive another sinner of his/or her sins? Jesus said a man cannot enter the gates of heaven unless he is born again. Jesus is the only one who paid the price of our sins. He commissioned His disciples to preach or tell the gosple story so that the world would have the opportunity to have their sins forgiven.

This statement is from The Bible, specifically from the Gospel of John. It refers to the authority given to the apostles by Jesus to forgive or retain sins. It is understood as an explanation of the power of the sacrament of reconciliation in the Catholic Church.

Does the Pope have authority to forgive sins?

Study the link. The Sacrament of Penance as a dispensation of His Divine Mercy, facilitates the pardoning of sin by a priest. The Pope is a priest."Now when it was late that same day, the first of the week, and the doors were shut, where the disciples were gathered together, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them: 'Peace be to you.' And when He had said this, he shewed them His hands and His side. The disciples therefore were glad, when they saw the Lord. He said therefore to them again: 'Peace be to you. As the Father hath sent Me, I also send you.' When He had said this, He breathed on them; and He said to them: 'Receive ye the Holy Ghost. Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.'" (John 20:19-23)

NoA Catholic Answer (Catholics in union with the Pope)Catholics believe Jesus Christ has the power to forgive sins, and that this power He gave to His followers and commissioned them to forgive sins, when He said to the Twelve: "'Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.' And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, 'Receive the holy Spirit. Almost, but not by nameJesus said to his apostles...Joh 20:23 Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.... and to remit or retain, that person would have to be told the sin/sins.

However, the normal way that He has set it up that this forgiveness is to be obtained by men is through the instrument of His priests. In other words, He has made His forgiveness contingent on our repentance in the form of confession to one of His priests. After sincere repentance and confession, the priest declares God's forgiveness in absolution.

Who received the power to forgive and heal Jesus?

Catholic AnswerThe Catholic Church believes that in light of the following verses, the power to forgive sins was given to the Apostles, and through "apostolic succession" to Bishops and Priest of the Catholic Church. JN 20:19-23On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. (Jesus) said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained."MT 16:18-19And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

Can Mary forgive your sins?

No.The Catholic Church believes that "Only God forgives sin."When a penitent person asks God for forgiveness, his (or her) sins are immediately forgiven.Catholics also believe that when someone sins they not only hurt their relationship with God, they also injure the entire church, the body of Christ.Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained." (John 20:21-23)Several important things are happening here all at once and within the same context:• "As the Father has sent me, so I send you." God the Father sent Christ to us for many reasons, one of which was to forgive our sins, so Christ sends the Apostles and their successors to, among other things, forgive our sins.• Jesus, God the Son, "breathes" on the Apostles. The only other moment in Holy Scripture where God breathes on humanity is in Genesis 2:7, when the Lord "breathes" divine life into man. When God breathes on humans significant things happen.• And then and only then Jesus says, "Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained."Jesus says this a bit differently in Matthew 16:19: "I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."Oral confessing of sins is recommended over and over in both the Old and New Testaments:• James 5:16• Acts 19:18• Matthew 3:5-6• Mark 1:5• 1 Timothy 6:12• 1 John 1:9• Numbers 5:6-7• Nehemiah 9:2• Sirach 4:26The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation with a priest ordained in the name of Jesus Christ not only reconciles the sinner to God but with the entire church, including you and me.Remember all sacraments are encounters with God. This sacrament is a healing encounter between God and the penitent.
