Jesus is reported to have gone up more than one mountain. For example:
Mark 3:13: Jesus went up a mountain with those who wished to be his disciples, and chose twelve of them. No reason is given for making a mountain the venue, but it adds drama to the story.
Mark 6:46: After feeding the five thousand, Jesus sent them away and then went up into a mountain to pray. Once again, no reason is given for having to go up a mountain to pray, but had he not done so there would have been no explantion for him knowing that the disciples were in trouble in their ship on the lake, and there would have been no opportunity for him to walk on the water to save them.
Mark 9:2: Jesus took Peter, John and James up a high mountain, where he was transfigured (his appearance changed) and they saw him talking to Moses and Elijah. No reason is given for the need to go up a mountain in order to meet Moses and Elijah, but once again this adds drama to the story.
Jesus went to the desert to fast and pray for 40 days and nights, as a way to prepare for his ministry and to face temptation from the devil. It was a time of spiritual reflection and testing before he began his public ministry.
Jesus went into the desert to fast and pray. While in the desert, He was tempted by the devil. However, He overcame all temptations.
Jesus went into the desert almost as a way of linking himself with his people's historical experience. Jesus felt he was willed by the Spirit to go into the desert.
"...Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil" (Matthew 4:1).
That the Scriptures might be fulfilled
In the King James version In Matthew 4 # Satan came to Jesus when he was fasting and tempted him to turn stones to bread. # Satan took Jesus to the top of the temple in Jereusalem and tempted him to jump off, saying that angels would protect him. # Next Satan offered Jesus all the kingdoms of the world if he would worship Satan.
After Jesus spent 40 days in the desert being tempted by the devil He traveled to Galilee to begin His ministry in earnest. While there he visited the town He grew up in (Nazareth), then He traveled to Capernium, which is by the Sea of Galilee to start calling His disciples to Himself.
Jesus' temptation took place in the wilderness, as mentioned in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. He fasted for 40 days and was tempted by the devil three times.
According to Christian belief, Jesus was tempted by Satan in the desert but did not give in to temptation. He resisted temptation by quoting Scripture and remained faithful to God.
People go to the Stations of the Cross as a way to reflect on the final moments of Jesus' life and to deepen their understanding of his sacrifice. It is a form of prayer and meditation that helps individuals connect spiritually with the journey Jesus took to his crucifixion.
Jesus disappeared into the sky when he left Earth. Do you mean why did he go into the desert for 40 days? He went to spiritually prepare himself for Satan's temptation and his ministry on Earth.
Mat 4:1Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
