The Holy Spirit fills many purposes. Two of those purposes are to testify of truth and to comfort and sustain in times of trial.
Jesus knew that the apostles would be teaching His gospel. They would need the Holy Ghost to testify to those listening of the truthfulness of their words.
Jesus also knew that they would suffer persecution for their beliefs and missionary efforts. They would need the Holy Ghost to give them comfort in the midst of the persecution and a sustaining power to help them on their missions, considering how hard those missions would be.

Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to empower and guide his followers, fulfilling his promise to be with them always. The Holy Spirit enables believers to spread the message of Christianity, gives them spiritual gifts, and provides comfort and guidance in their lives.

They said the Holy Spirit was our conscious, guiding us through this world the way Jesus wants us live.
There is of course scripture explaining at an adult level --
